IUPUI women beat Cleveland State
INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI(w)'s soccer team ripped off three late goals including a Katrina McCrory strike just 43 seconds into overtime to rally for a 3-2 win over Cleveland State at Kuntz Stadium on a rainy Friday night. The win extended the Jaguars' winning streak to seven, surpassing the school record of six set last season.
"Coming back from two goals down today shows just how mature the team has become and how much we are progressing," Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "It's exciting for the team to break that record, improve to 7-2 and build on the best start we've ever had.
"The kids are getting the job done at this point in time. They're coming out and making plays that help us win games."
On Friday, IUPUI (7-2-0) found itself down 2-0 after the visiting Vikings scored once in each half. Marley Greiner chipped a long ball from the right wing that bounded over goalkeeper Jamie Farrell for the game's first goal in the 40th minute. In the 66th minute, Natalie Daniels took a pass from Sylvia Olsby and beat a pair of defenders before rolling a shot past Farrell from 14 yards out.
However, the Jaguars didn't quit.
"After we got down 2-0, we needed to pick it up," junior Natalie Holland said. "We knew we could get the goals back. We just needed to play with urgency."
Sophomore Alicia Brock# broke through with her fourth goal of the year in the 70th minute, setup by a feed from junior Kelly Williams. Williams made a long run from her defensive position up the left sideline before sending a diagonal ball to Brock. Brock proceeded to beat her mark before angling a ground ball shot to the right post in front of CSU (1-8-0) goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich to make it 2-1.
Holland then tied the game with a gorgeous free kick in the 76th minute. Holland teed up the restart from just in front of the Jaguars' bench with the plan to put it on frame and have her teammates crash the net. Instead, her right-footed ball glanced off the far post and in the net for Holland's first tally of the year, giving IUPUI all the momentum of the match.
"I was just going to shoot it on goal because their goalie was bobbling it a lot," Holland said. "Fortunately, it went in."
"From that point on, we knew we were here," Holland said. "We knew we could finish the job from there. We're getting more mature. We would've liked to finish it in regulation, but we'll take the extra 43 seconds."
In overtime, senior Leslie Walker set up the game-winner by carrying the ball along the top of the 18-yard box before tapping the ball to McCrory, who had to create a crease before firing. Once given some space, the senior midfielder blazed a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the year, all of which have been game-winners.
After being outshot 10-4 in the first half, Johnson's squad rebounded to outshoot CSU 18-17 on the evening. IUPUI also doubled up the Vikings in corner kicks, 4-2.
"A sign of our maturity for us was in the first half was their team came out with a lot of energy and yelling and running around. They weren't getting a lot of quality chances, but they kept the ball in our end of the field," Johnson said. "Instead of getting rattled, our girls stuck to the gameplan and did a good job of finding feet and working the ball up the field."
Four Jags attempted three shots each and both Holland and freshman Lisa Thomas put two each on frame. Zinkiewich made seven saves for CSU and Farrell made two stops for the Jaguars.
IUPUI concludes its non-conference stretch on Tuesday when it hosts Murray State at Kuntz Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and live stats will be available via IUPUIJags.com.
