The South Dakota State women's soccer team continued its impressive homestand with a 1-0 win over Kansas City on Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park...

After 75 scoreless minutes, Diana Potterveld put the Jacks up for good with a close-range shot. Darci Miller controlled a loose ball in the box following a SDSU corner kick and played it to an unmarked Potterveld. The goal ties Potterveld for first on the team with four, while Miller notches her first assist of the season.

With six minutes remaining in the game, Stamatakis made a lead-preserving save after a Kansas City forward headed a ball on goal. The ball was cleared out of danger.

"The defense played exceptionally well," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "We talked a lot about covering for each other and the fact that, because the ground was wet, there were rebounds and such. When one person slipped or made a mistake, we had a player there to help recover and that was great."

The game ended 1-0 in favor of the Jacks.

The first half was relatively quiet, considering the Jacks recorded five shots on goal. All five were saved by the Kangaroos' goalkeeper.

The two teams played a scoreless first half.

SDSU and Kansas City were tied in shots (7-7), but the Jacks led in shots on goal (5-1) and corner kicks (1-0). Kansas City was whistled for five fouls and one offsides, while SDSU was whistled for one foul and zero offsides.

Megan Kingston led the Jackrabbit attack with three shots, one on goal. Darci Millerattempted two shots, both on goal.

Elisa Stamatakis made one save in the first half.

The majority of the second half was more of the same, but Potterveld finally broke through with her fourth shot of the game.

"We did what we needed to do to win the game today," said Wedemeyer.

SDSU led in shots (17-12), shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (4-3). Kansas City was whistled for nine fouls and three offsides, while SDSU was whistled for eight fouls and one offsides.

Potterveld led the attack with four shots, all on goal, and one goal.

Stamatakis made four total saves for her fifth shutout of the season, which includes all four SDSU wins.

SDSU improved to 4-9-2, 2-3-1 in The Summit League. Perhaps more importantly, SDSU is 2-0-1 in its last three games.
Kansas City dropped to 5-8-4, 2-3-1 in league play, the same record as the Jacks.

The win not only pushes SDSU ahead of Kansas City in the league standings and is its second win in a row, but it keeps its postseason hopes alive.

"The fact that we won two in a row is great," Wedemeyer said. "We have not done that this season, so it feels pretty good. We need to keep it going. We need to finish our chances and be more lethal in the box. We are excited for the next two games."

"[The Summit League Championship] is always in the back of our mind," said Wedemeyer. "There is a lot of pressure to make it when we are hosting it and we certainly did not start well. The future is not totally in our hands, but we need to control what we can and get a result on Sunday."

Next up SDSU plays its regular season home finale versus South Dakota on Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Fishback. Sunday is also Senior Day, as SDSU celebrates its seven seniors on this year's roster.

"It is our Senior Day and it is an emotional day for our seniors," said Wedemeyer. "I will quote SDSU head football coach John Stiegelmeier: “We want to be 1-0 on Sunday.” We cannot look at anything else other than taking care of business on our end and getting a result. It will be a great day."
