The South Dakota State women's soccer team was edged by Iowa State 2-1 in a second-half thriller...

All of the scoring occurred in the second half, as the Jacks came up one goal short.

The first half was rather quiet, as neither team was able to find the net. SDSU led in shots (4-3) and shots on goal (2-0), but trailed the Cyclones in corner kicks (2-0). ISU was whistled for four fouls, while SDSU was whistled for three.

Diana Potterveld and Dani Patterson led the offensive attack with one shot on goal apiece.Elisa Stamatakis was not forced to make a save in the first half.

After a first-half shutout, ISU switched goalkeepers at intermission.

Only three minutes into the second half, the Cyclones capitalized on a give-and-go between two forwards to beat the defense and score on a one-on-one with the keeper.

The Jacks responded four minutes later on a deep ball from Patterson to Christa Nyblom. Nyblom hit a line drive shot from the top of the box to beat the keeper and even the score at 1-1.

"It was a great play," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "We talked with Christa about making runs to the ball and she timed her run perfectly. Dani Patterson played a perfect ball to her and she finished."

The two teams traded attacks for the next 22 minutes before ISU took advantage of a corner kick, finishing on a header from close range to take a 2-1 lead.

Despite a couple more threats from the Jackrabbit offense, the Cyclones lead held.

ISU held the advantage in shots (12-11) and corner kicks (6-2), but SDSU led in shots on goal (5-4). ISU was whistled for seven fouls and nine offside, while SDSU was whistled for three fouls and two offside.

The Jackrabbits played five players off of the bench, as 16 total players saw action in the game.

"We have girls who have worked very hard and earned that playing time," said Wedemeyer. "We also have to consider that we have three games in six days, so we have to play more people to stay competitive game in and game out."

Delaney Ratcliffe led the Jacks with three shots, two on goal. Nyblom scored the lone goal on an assist from Patterson.

Stamatakis made two saves on the night.

SDSU dropped to 1-5-1 on the season, while ISU improved to 6-3-0.

"We made a step forward in a lot of ways," said Wedemeyer. "We played a very good team and we played them close the entire way and I was happy with that aspect. Where we are falling short a bit is that last play; someone making a play that allows us to get a goal."

Next up the Jacks host Northern Iowa on Sunday at 1 p.m. UNI lost to both common opponents this season (1-0 vs. Green Bay, 7-1 at Iowa State), while SDSU split against the two (2-0 win at Green Bay).

"Every game is different and how teams approach those games is always different," Wedemeyer said. "We need to focus on ourselves and put our game plan in place and execute to the best of our ability."

The Panthers hosted North Dakota State on Friday. At the conclusion of the SDSU vs. ISU game, the UNI vs. NDSU game was headed into overtime.
