The South Dakota State women's soccer team battled the elements in a 1-1 (2 OT) tie versus IUPUI on Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park...
The two teams competed in poor weather conditions, as the wind gusted up to 30 miles per hour and temperatures dropped below 50 degrees.
Playing into the wind, SDSU surrendered the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. The Jaguar forward controlled a loose ball in the box and finished to the corner of the goal.
Despite holding a significant advantage in shots (7-3) and shots on goal (3-1), the Jacks trailed 1-0 at the half. SDSU took two corner kicks to one for IUPUI. SDSU was whistled for three fouls and one offsides, while IUPUI was whistled for four fouls and one offsides.
Diana Potterveld, Megan Kingston and Stacy Guijarro led the Jackrabbit attack with one shot on goal apiece.
After pressuring for nearly the entire second half, the Jackrabbits finally broke through in the 79th minute. Diana Potterveld dribbled down the right side and crossed the ball into the box, past two defenders, to an open Christa Nyblom. Nyblom struck the ball to the lower corner of the net and past the goalkeeper to tie the score at 1-1.
Both teams defended a final attack by the other to keep the game tied.
Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
SDSU dominated regulation offensively with the advantage in shots (19-2), shots on goal (10-1) and corner kicks (8-1). SDSU was whistled for nine fouls and two offsides, while IUPUI was whistled for five fouls and one offsides.
Dani Patterson led the Jackrabbit attack with three shots, all on goal. Potterveld and Kingston registered two shots on goal each.
SDSU played the first overtime with the wind, but was unable to find the game-winning goal. SDSU attempted two shots in the first overtime, one on goal. IUPUI did not attempt a shot in the first overtime.
The Jackrabbit defense stood tall in the second overtime, fighting off numerous attacks by the Jaguars.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
SDSU moves to 2-9-2 overall, 0-3-1 in The Summit League.
IUPUI moves to 2-11-2, 0-2-2 in conference play.
The Jacks return to action on Sunday versus Western Illinois. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.
