Jaime Named To ASUN All-Academic Team
LAKEPOINT, Ga. – In the first wave of ASUN Conference men’s soccer postseason awards released by league officials Tuesday, FGCU junior Miguel Jaime was named to the ASUN All-Academic Team for the second-consecutive year.
Jaime (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) boasts a 3.30 GPA as a forensic studies major and becomes just the second FGCU player to make two appearances on the ASUN All-Academic Team, joining David Robledo in 2013 and 2014. The midfielder is a two-time FGCU Student-Athlete of the Month and is one of only six Eagles to appear in all 17 matches this year.
“It’s a testament to Miguel’s work ethic not only on the field but also in the classroom, and it’s nice to see a great kid rewarded for all that effort,” commented FGCU head coach Bob Butehorn. “Furthermore, for him to be recognized two years in a row is an impressive feat as he’s one of just three players in the league who has accomplished that.”
USC Upstate’s Lukas Sommer was named the ASUN Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The 11-member All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. All members of the team – which is voted on by the league’s directors of athletics communication – boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.
An ASUN All-Freshman Team selection and ASUN Second Team member last year as a sophomore along with his All-Academic Team nod, Jaime is tied for 7th on the team with seven points off two goals and three assists this year. Jaime has started 13 of the matches he’s appeared in and logged 910 minutes – the 3rd-most among FGCU’s midfielders.
Jaime issued his first assist of the year at NJIT on Sept. 24 before following it up with a pair of helpers in FGCU’s 6-5 triumph over Rutgers three days later. His first goal of the year came a week later as he tied the match at FIU before the Eagles went on for a 4-1 victory. His final goal of the regular season occurred opposite Stetson as the Green and Blue extended what was then the nation’s longest winning streak to 10 in a row on Oct. 14.
Jaime and FGCU recently concluded another standout ASUN regular season. Dating back to the 2010 season, the Eagles have a dominant 40-5-5 record in all conference regular-season games. Out of a possible 150 points that could have been earned in that time, the Green and Blue have claimed an impressive 125 of them (83.3 percent).
FGCU (12-3-2, 4-1-1 ASUN) is tied for the 4th-most wins in the nation and is ranked #20 this week in the highly-respected College Soccer News National Poll, in addition to appearing at #22 in the NSCAA poll, which is the only poll the NCAA officially recognizes.
The No. 2-seeded Eagles will host an ASUN Tournament quarterfinal match between No. 3 seed Lipscomb and No. 6 seed Stetson on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The winner of that game will then play FGCU in a semifinal game on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 seed North Florida will host No. 4 seed NJIT and No. 5 seed Jacksonville in a quarterfinal on Friday, Nov. 4, before playing either the Highlanders or Dolphins in the other semifinal on Sunday, Nov. 6. The highest remaining seed will host the ASUN Tournament Final on Saturday, Nov. 12.
