Jaroscak Nets Game Winner In 2OT, Army Tops
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Alex Jaroscak scored his first college goal in the 103rd minute to lift the Army men’s soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime win against Patriot League foe Boston University on Saturday evening at Clinton Field.
Army trailed 2-0 in the 82nd minute, but tallied two goals in the final 7:31 of regulation before Jaroscak won it in double overtime. With the victory, the Black Knights, who are ranked seventh in the current National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic Region poll, improve to 7-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers fall to 3-6-1 and 0-2-0.
Adding to his game-winning goal, Jaroscak picked up an assist for Army, while freshman midfielder Christian Ollen also scored. Sophomore forward Justin Lee added his first marker of the season, classmate Cody Guerry contributed a pair of assists, and freshman forward Nick Williams notched an assist. Junior goalkeeper Winston Boldt equaled his season high of seven saves while earning the win.
Sophomores Jeroen Blugh and Lucas McBride scored for Boston University, while junior Jordan Barker picked up an assist. Redshirt freshman goalie Matt Gilbert made nine saves in net.
McBride put the Terriers ahead 1-0 after intercepting an errant pass and finding the back of the net in the second minute of action. Army nearly found its way onto the score sheet in the 37th minute, as sophomore midfielder Justin Kim’s free kick was tipped just over the crossbar by Gilbert. Gilbert made an almost identical stop in the 45th minute, when Black Knight senior midfielder Jason Lewis’ long drive was directed over the bar.
Blugh doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 72nd minute, following up on Barker’s free kick to beat Boldt on the right side. Seconds after Gilbert saved an attempt by Guerry in the 83rd minute, Ollen drove home the ensuing rebound to bring Army back to within a goal. Lee converted a header off of Guerry’s free kick in the 88th minute to deadlock the match at 2-2, bringing the Black Knights back from a two-goal deficit.
Jaroscak beat Gilbert in the top left portion of the goal after receiving a pass from Williams to give Army its second league win, and second double-overtime victory of the year.
The Black Knights are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 9, when they host Colgate in a Patriot League contest scheduled for 7 p.m.
