Jean-Gilles' Golazo Wins it in OT for UMBC
Philadelphia, Pa.—UMBC men’s soccer picked up their third straight victory, knocking off La Salle 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night. Sophomore Patrick Jean-Gilles scored the game winner in the 96th minute to lift the Retrievers to victory, improving their record to 4-1-3 on the year.
“This was a great road win against a good La Salle team. The win says a lot about the character of our team: winning on the road and grinding out a win in overtime helps the confidence in our young team,” head coach Pete Caringi Jr. said following the win.
UMBC outshot the Explorers (5-4) 14-13, while La Salle held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) led the Retrievers in shots with five, as four other Retrievers recorded two shots in the win.
Junior Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) got the Retrievers on the board first, netting his first goal of the 2016 campaign in the 34th minute off an assist from Jon Bell (Silver Spring, Md./Richard Montgomery). The Explorers would find the equalizer early in the second half, forcing extra time.
Just six minutes into the extra session, sophomore Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) ripped a shot past La Salle keeper Mike Kirk on a beautiful bending ball from center field.
The Retrievers will return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 30 when they open up America East play at New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
