JMU Women Shut Out Old Dominion
NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 20, 2012 -- James Madison women's soccer coach Dave Lombardo got an early birthday gift when the Dukes handled Old Dominion 5-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association match Thursday afternoon.
Lombardo, who celebrates his birthday tomorrow, saw his Dukes (3-6-0, 1-0-0) score the program's most goals in a road game since 2006. ODU (2-6-0, 0-1-0) dropped its second straight game by shutout.
Sophomore Katie Hyland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) played a role in JMU's early scoring, netting the Dukes' first goal and assisting on the second in a span of just 20 seconds.
Senior Katie Menzie (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) sent a pass ahead to Hyland, who dribbled around ODU goalkeeper Brianna Alvarado and scored on an open net 36:48 into the game.
A long pass from Hyland found junior Lauren Wilson (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown), who sent a shot into the right side of the goal at 37:08.

* Katie Hyland scores off a pass from Katie Menzie, getting past ODU goalie Brianna Alvarado and shooting on an open net at 36:48.
* Hyland delivers a long pass to Lauren Wilson, who scores at 38:08.
* Freshman Elissa Halik (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) gives the Dukes a 3-0 lead when she scores on a rebound of a shot by junior Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) at 42:48.
Second Half:
* Kelly Germain scores the first of her two goals at 62:19. Redshirt junior Haley Miller (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and Sparks are credited with assists.
* Sophomore Stephanie Hamilton (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) sets up Germain's second goal with a long pass. The Dukes take a 5-0 lead at 83:45.
Of Note
* JMU, which ended a five-game losing streak, gained its second shutout victory of the season.
* Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Courter (Lincoln Park, N.J./Immaculate Heart) made two saves in just under 73 minutes and shared the shutout with sophomore goalkeeper Marlee Stynchula (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), who did not have a save in the final 17:19.
* Lauren Wilson scored her 19th career goal. She moved from tied for 14th to tied for 13th with Teri Joyce (1999-02) on JMU's career goals list. She moved from 21st place to tied for 18th with Sarah Cebulski (2003-06) on the Dukes' career points list.
* The last time JMU scored as many as five goals in a road game was 10/30/06 in a 5-0 win at Virginia Commonwealth in a CAA Tournament first-round game. The last time JMU scored five or more goals in any game was last season, when the Dukes beat Pittsburgh 6-0 on 8/26/11.
* The Dukes' next game is at defending CAA champion William and Mary on Sunday (Sept. 23, 2 p.m.). The Tribe took a six-game winning streak into a Sept. 20 game vs.VCU.
