Jones' Brilliant Goal Gives Beavers Win
CORVALLIS – Senior Emma Jones came up with a spectacular golden goal to give the Oregon State women’s soccer team a 1-0 double-overtime win over Washington State Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field.
The goal came in the 102nd minute on a beautiful, curling left-footed effort that found the top corner off a free kick from 20 yards out.
“This was just a battle,” said Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode. “I’m so proud of the way our team fought. We knew this would be a physical game without a lot of flow to it, but I thought our players fought like crazy for each other. And then what a way to finish – what a special goal that was.”
Bella Geist made three saves in the match, as the Oregon State defense completed an outstanding weekend, holding its opponents scoreless over a combined 211 minutes of soccer.
Washington State came close to going in front in the 30th minute, when they pinged a shot off the post from eight yards out. Oregon State summoned a pair of corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes, as well as a Jones shot from the top of the box, but the teams headed to the break scoreless.
Allison Pantuso nearly got the breakthrough mid-way through the second half, when she got on the end of a set piece from Jones. Natalie Higgins forced a save in the 70th minute, firing a rocket from outside the box.
Nicole Nickerson had an opportunity in the 72nd minute, but her shot was blocked. Shea O’Connor and Ashleigh Fonsen both took aim just minutes later, but the Washington State defense stood firm to get in the way of both attempts.
Neither side was able to get the ball in the net during regulation, and the teams headed to overtime level at zero.
Both teams struggled to create many chances in the overtime periods until Jones curved her effort into the top corner to send the Beavers home with a win.
Oregon State will wrap up its three-game home stand Friday, when it hosts Arizona at Lorenz Field.
