Jones lifts 49ers past Blazers in double OT
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte peppered the UAB cage with a season-best 29 shots but needed just one to find the back of the net, and it received that score during the second overtime as junior Amanda Jones netted the game winner at 103:38 Friday night at Transamerica Field.
The victory temporarily moves the 49ers back into first place of the Conference USA East Division with three regular-season matches remaining. Charlotte with 11 points based upon its league record, own a two-point cushion over FIU following Friday’s action as the Panthers dropped a double-overtime decision to East Carolina.
Jones, who led all players with a career-high eight attempts, slipped her left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box to the far right post past Blazers goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez for her third game-winning goal of the campaign. It marked her sixth score of the year, one shy of the single-season best for the Preseason Conference USA Player to Watch and Oct. 7 Conference USA Player of the Week.
Jones’ eight shots ties her with seven other players for sixth on the school’s single-game list. The 29 49ers’ (8-5-2, 3-2-2 C-USA) team shots is tied for ninth in program history with four other occurrences and the most since the Niners tallied 30 against FGCU Aug. 26, 2011.
Senior Alex Kubrick collected five saves in her fourth solo shutout of the fall, giving her 16 for her career. She was the last line of defense that limited UAB (9-5-1, 2-3-1 C-USA) to just 10 shots, including only two in the extra periods.
Jones nearly put the ball away in regulation with a header at 75:51; however, Jimenez helped prevent it by going in and deflected it off the crossbar. Overall, Charlotte registered 11 shots on goal to force Jimenez into 10 stops.
The 49ers will take their record and be off for a week before resuming the three-game homestand one week from tonight, welcoming Marshall to town for a 7 p.m. Friday start. The Thundering Herd own seven points with a 2-3-1 league ledger through Friday’s action.
