Jones scores early;Kubrick preserves shutout
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior Amanda Jones, who gave Charlotte a thrilling, double-overtime victory in Friday’s season opener, was back at it again Sunday afternoon. This time, she scored early and the 49ers defense, led by senior goalkeeper Alex Kubrick, kept UNC Wilmington off the board for a 1-0 home victory at Transamerica Field.
Jones, one of 16 preseason Players to Watch in Conference USA, netted her second game-winning goal of the young season with her score at 1:32. The two game-winning goals are a new career high for the Mahwah, N.J., product. The time of the goal marked the 10th fastest in program history, spanning 20 years dating back to 1994.
The play developed when senior SarahAnn Waugh sent a header backwards over her head while standing inside the midfield circle. Her redirection landed at Jones’ feet. Jones then sprinted with possession for 20 yards before sending a low shot to the far right post, past Seahawks goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy.
It would be Jones’ shot of the game, though Charlotte (2-0) mounted 11 towards the UNC Wilmington goal. Junior Sara Trexler paced the Niners with three attempts, while Waugh added a pair for the only two 49ers with multiple shots.
Charlotte’s defense helped limit the UNCW chances, though a late flurry evened the totals. Nicole Costa led the Seahawks with three attempts, including two on goal. UNC Wilmington (0-2) had one last solid look at the cage but Allye Mertes’ shot with two seconds to play was collected by Kubrick.
Kubrick, with her second-straight shutout to start the season, raised her career clean sheets mark to 14, sliding past Jessica Brooks (1995; ’97-98) for third on the school’s all-time list. Next on the chart is Jenn Howell (1999-2002) with 20 shutouts.
The 49ers will look to continue their momentum with a 7 p.m. Tuesday match against Gardner-Webb at Transamerica Field. The contest will be the first ever between the two schools.
