Kayser's PK Lifts Warhawks to 5-0
Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) capitalized on a penalty kick in the 25th minute of play to lift the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Benedictine (Ill.) Sunday at Fiskum Field. The Warhawks move to 5-0 with the win while the Eagles drop to 2-3.
The match started slow with neither team notching a quality shot until the 22nd minute. Benedictine tested Warhawk goalkeeper Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) with a shot on net, but the senior was up for the task and made the save.
Three minutes later, Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) was taken down in the box and the Warhawks earned a penalty kick. Kayser punched it past the keeper for the only goal of the game.
Head Coach Tony Guinn cited the play of Derick Achombom (Bamenda, Cameroon/Government Bilingual High) and Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) on defense. After the game Guinn noted, "Derick was really good today. Anytime Benedictine threatened, Derick was there to break it up." Guinn added, "Buchman and Achombom were our MVP's today."
Buchman made a save in each half to earn his fourth shutout of the season. The Warhawks have not conceded a goal in their last 320 minutes of play.
The match was very evenly played throughout, with much of the action happening around midfield. UW-Whitewater did manage to outshoot the Eagles 10-9, but Benedictine tallied four corners to the Warhawks' two.
The Warhawks, ranked 19th in the country by D3soccer.com, are off until Friday, September 18 when they travel to Kenosha to play Carthage at 7 pm.
