Kelly Nets Hat Trick; Helps RU Edge Out UCCS 4-3 in OT
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.: It was a cold, bitter, and windy night tonight as Regis men's soccer trekked down to play Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents UC-Colorado Springs, defeating them 4-3 after three minutes of overtime.
Senior Mark Kelly netted a hat trick during the 90 minutes of regulation and the Rangers garnered a penalty kick in the fourth minute of OT to close out the match with a big, exciting win.
Kelly scored his first goal less than four minutes into regulation after junior Martin Maybin broke from the opposition's defense and passed over to his teammate on the left wing. Kelly beat the UCCS defense for a shot at the goal, scoring to the right to edge the Rangers into a 1-0 lead.
Colorado Springs would answer with two of their own goals within the 10 minute mark to make the match interesting and end the scoring for the first half with Regis down 2-1.
The opposition would score again in the fourth minute of the second half to expand the gap 3-1 with virtually an entire half left to play.
With the larger gap, the Rangers fired up despite the 36-mile hour winds and temperatures seeming in the low 20s.
Five minutes after the UCCS goal, freshman Brian Strasbaugh amped up and snagged a shot attempt that was too hot for the Mountain Lion goalie to keep. Kelly picked up the rebound and scored top right for his second goal of the night in the 51st minute of play.
With the score 3-2 and RU still with the deficit, the Rangers entered the last minute and a half of the match. At 88:13, Maybin broke down the right wing and crossed in to the box.
Freshman Savon Henderson bent over backwards, literally, chesting the ball behind him and up over the oncoming goalie's hands to Kelly, giving him the opportunity to head the ball bottom right of the UCCS goal and even the score.
Ready to get back to the warmth, Regis maintained possession most of the three minutes into OT, putting two shots with the Mountain Lions not managing one.
Three minutes into OT, junior Arthor "Thor" Kristinsson was fouled inside penalty range, garnering a penalty kick opportunity for his team and Maybin was the one to take it, scoring a dribbler to the right (now 2-2 for PK attempts) while the goalie went left to win the match in thrilling fashion.
During the match, both Kelly and Maybin scored their eighth goals of the 2013 season. Maybin has also gathered six assists and Kelly with four for 22 and 20 points respectively.
Sophomore goalie Christian Nicolosi put up three saves on the night all in the first half, keeping the Mountain Lions from the win.
Regis advances their record to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC with the win. Next Friday, October 11, the Rangers will take on Colorado Mesa University at home at 1:00 p.m.
