Kent State Soccer Rushes Past Youngstown State, 6-1
KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women’s soccer team (4-2-0) got back on the winning track Friday afternoon at Zoeller Field, as the Golden Flashes rattled off six straight goals in posting a 6-1 win over regional foe Youngstown State.
The Golden Flashes burst out of the halftime break with a goal less than two minutes in, and later tallied a trio of goals in a span of less than seven minutes to put the game away.
Kent State’s victory halted a two-game losing streak after dropping a pair of games last week in California.
Youngstown State (3-3-1) took advantage early on, notching the game’s first goal in the 10th minute. Kent State, who out-shot the Penguins 17-3 in the half, didn’t get the equalizer until the 37th minute when Jessacca Gironda (Akron, Ohio) got her fourth goal of the year.
Motivated out of the halftime intermission, Kent State took the lead for good when freshman Stephanie Haugh (Richmond Hill, Ontario) scored what proved to be the game’s winning goal in the 47th minute on a blistering volley from short range.
After a small lull, Kent State took charge later in the half with three goals in a span of 6:48 – marking a new team record for fastest three goals in a game. Sophomore Jaclyn Dutton (Bridgeport, Ohio) got on the board first with a hard-working unassisted goal in the 60th minute.
Following up in the 61st minute, sophomore Morgan Mah (Edmonton, Alberta) headed in a corner kick from Megan Repas (Avon, Ohio). Repas again teed up another assist in the 67th minute when she found Hannah Johnson’s head (Medina, Ohio), giving the senior her first collegiate goal.
Freshman Calli Rinicella (Solon, Ohio) rounded out the game’s scoring in the 78th minute, with a third assist going to Repas to tie the team record for individual assists in a game.
The Kent State defense held Youngstown State to just five shots on the day, with only two shots finding the frame.
Kent State heads to Duquesne Sunday, Sept. 11 for a 1 p.m. first touch.
