Kickers Finish with Undefeated WIAC Record
The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team used a goal in each half to defeat UW-River Falls 2-0 and finish the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season with a perfect 8-0-0 record Saturday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. This is the first time in school history the Warhawks complete the WIAC season undefeated and the third year in a row they have won the WIAC regular season title. The Warhawks finish regular season play with a 13-4-1 overall record and have earned the number one seed in the WIAC tournament. River Falls drops to 8-7-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the WIAC.
Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) got the Warhawks on the board in the 21st minute putting one past the keeper after a shot by Sarah Sedlar (Racine/Case) rebounded back to Woodson's feet.
The Warhawks continued to pressure the Falcons shooting five more times in the first half. The Warhawks totaled twelve shots in the first half to River Falls' eight.
UW-W continued to knock on the doorstep of the goal in the second half firing off nineteen more shots. Chrissy Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) finally broke through in the 79th minute to make it 2-0. Tooren punched in the rebound of her own shot for her tenth goal of the season. Tooren and Woodson now have ten goals apiece to lead the team.
The 31 shots by the Warhawks is a single-game season high and they more than tripled the shot output of the Falcons. The Falcons shot the ball nine times in the game, but seven were on goal and were all saved by Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley). Myers tallies her fifth shutout of the season and the tenth of her career.
The Warhawks have earned the top seed in the WIAC tournament which is slated to begin on October 30. The top two seeds earn a bye which means the Warhawks do not play until November 1 when they host the lowest remaining seed in a match beginning at 6:00 pm at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
