King falls in CC Tourney semis at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Following an upset win on Monday night in the Conference Carolinas Tournament, the King University women's soccer team's season came to an end on Thursday afternoon at No. 4 seed Pfeiffer University. The eighth seeded Tornado fell 2-0 in the Conference Carolinas Tournament, marking the farthest the Tornado have advanced in the league.
The Falcons (13-6) pressured the Tornado defense early and often, compiling 12 shots in the first half. Pfeiffer had a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes, followed by a header that sailed just high of the goal. Their first shot on frame came in the 18th minute, but Nicole Dagher was there to keep the game scoreless. Dagher made another save before the Falcons broke through in the 32nd minute.
Kayla Rodriguez took a corner kick that ended up in a scrum at the back post where Miracle Campbell gathered the ball and slid it into the back of the net to put Pfeiffer ahead. Dagher game up with four more saves, and totaled six stops in the first half, as King (6-11-2) trailed 1-0 at halftime.
It didn't take long for the Falcons to extend their lead in the second half as they took three shots in the first four minutes. In the 52nd minute, Aaliyah Jackson ripped a shot that went off the back post where Hannah Hill collected the ball and sent it into the open net to give the Falcons a two-goal advantage.
The pressure didn't stop as Dagher came up with three saves in a row from the 64th to 66th minutes to keep the Tornado deficit at two. In the 80th minute the Tornado put a little pressure on the Falcons as Lindsay Curtis took a corner kick that was headed toward the goal by Rachel Thorpe. However, the attempt went wide. Thorpe placed King's lone shot on goal in the 90th minute, but the shot was saved as King's season ended with the 2-0 defeat.
Pfeiffer outshot King 23-3, and had eight corner kicks to King's one. Dagher came within one save of her career-high with 11 saves.
The senior trio of Devon Shanklin, Bekah Ramstack and Kelsey Plummer conclude their careers after helping King transition into NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas. They also helped lead the Tornado to their first Conference Carolinas Tournament win on Monday when they defeated top-seed Lees-McRae College.
