Freshman goalkeeper Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) and the Warhawk defense came up big in several key situations to lift the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Washington University-St. Louis Sunday afternoon at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
 
The Warhawks, playing their second match in less than 24 hours and winners of eight of their last ten, improve to 9-5-1 overall. The Bears fall to 6-6-1.
 
The Bears tested Warhawk keeper King early in the match with two shots on goal in the first 14 minutes, but King was positioned to make saves on both.
 
UW-W had an opportunity in the 33rd minute, but a header by Jake Santellano (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) was saved by WashU goalie Connor Mathes.
 
The Warhawks earned a corner kick in the 43rd minute and elected Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) to put the ball back in play. Clancy sent a towering ball into the box that bounced off of a couple defenders before finding the head of Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) who headed it over the keeper for a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
 
The second half, the Bears had the wind at their back and would continue to challenge King and the Warhawk defense.
 
King came up big for the Warhawks in the 55th minute, making a spectacular save on a header from about four feet in front of him to keep WashU off the board.
 
Another opportunity for the Bears was snuffed out by a well-positioned King in the 68th minute.
 
The Warhawks' backline of Evan Donini (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West), Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee), Isaac Monson (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) and Garrett Morgando (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) continued to stifle the Bears' attack as the half wore on by winning 50-50 balls and preventing the offense from developing any sort of rhythm.
 
King finished the match with six saves to improve to 7-1 and earn his third solo shutout of the season.
 
The Warhawks have not allowed a goal in 194 minutes and 16 seconds despite being outshot 23-20 in that span.
 
Up next, UW-W will host Loras College on Thursday, October 25 and 7 p.m. in the annual battle for the Hawk Cup.
