ORLANDO, Fla. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2012 campaign with a 2-1 win over South Florida in their final game at the UCF Tournament on Sunday (Sept. 2). The Big Green concluded the weekend with a1-1 record defeating South Florida and falling to host, UCF. Tri-captain Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) and Jackie Friedman (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts.
Sophomore midfielder Kendall Kraus (San Diego, Calif.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute of action, ending a 1-1 stalemate between the Big Green and Bulls, giving Dartmouth (1-1-0) its first non-conference win since defeating Maine last season.
The teams entered the second half deadlocked at 1-1, but the Big Green held its own despite being outshot by the Bulls, 7-6, in the second half and, 17-12, throughout the contest.
Dartmouth and South Florida traded jabs throughout the second half with both teams having plenty of scoring opportunities. Allison Yeager (North Potomac, Md.), continued to excel on the offensive side of the ball and almost ended the stalemate in the 64th minute, forcing USF's keeper, Christiane Endler, to make a play on the ball.
Kraus' sealed the victory for the Big Green with her first career game-winner and sent the Bulls to 2-3-0 on the season.
The scoresheet was very balanced for the Big Green. Veterans Solomon and Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) led the attack for Dartmouth. Solomon had a team-best three shots while Lozier added two.
Goalkeeper Tatiana Saunders (Rye, N.Y.) made five saves in her second complete game of the season.
The Big Green came out aggressive on the offensive side of the ball in the first half. Dartmouth shots accounted for the first three shots of the game and senior tri-captain Kim Rose (Seaford, N.Y.) got the Big Green on the scoreboard in the ninth minute of action.
Rose, who spent most of the 2011 season injured, connected with a ball from classmate Libby Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.) in front of the South Florida net and tapped it into the back left side of the net to give Dartmouth the early edge.
The Bulls ramped up their offense after the Big Green goal and tested Saunders with five consecutive shots, forcing Saunders to make two saves.
South Florida capitalized on a Dartmouth foul in their offensive zone and in the 19th minute tied the game on a goal from Cara Patterson.
The Big Green return to the Northeast to conclude its season-opening road swing when they travel to Orono, Maine to take on the Maine Black Bears on Friday (Sept. 7). Dartmouth opens its home slate on Sunday, Sept. 9 when Rutgers travels to Hanover.
