HANOVER, N.H.- After nearly 65 minutes without a goal, sophomore Kendall Kraus (San Diego, Calif.) capitalized on a break in the Boston University defense in the 87th minute to lead the Dartmouth women's soccer team to a come-from-behind victory over BU on Wednesday (Oct. 17) at Burnham Field.
The win gives Dartmouth (10-4-0) 10 wins for the first time since the 2009 season and extends its current winning streak to four consecutive games. The Big Green also snaps a five-game winless streak against the Terriers and gives BU (11-6-5) its first loss in eight tries.
With the clock winding down in regulation, the Big Green forced a BU turnover in the middle third of the field. Tasha Wilkins (Portland, Ore.) caught the ball just inside the 18-yard line and hit a streaking Kraus, who placed the ball just inside the upper right hand corner, cementing the win for Dartmouth
The teams entered the second half deadlocked at 1-1 after goals from each team in the first half. The Big Green came out on fire, outshooting the Terriers, 7-2, in the second frame and owning a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) looked as if she might end the stalemate at the 62:39 mark. After a BU foul 25 yards away from the box, the senior co-captain placed the free kick on frame but it just sneaked over the crossbar keeping the score tied.
Dartmouth, who controlled the majority of the play in the second half, had several chances on balls crossed into the box. Wilkins had two chances in the box that the Terriers were able to contain while Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) also had a crack at the goal.
Just minutes before the goal, Solomon had another opportunity to end the tie on a cross in the box from junior defender Kelly Brait (Glenview, Ill.). The ball landed just at her feet, but she couldn't settle it down, allowing BU to clear the ball out of danger.
For as much as Dartmouth controlled the second half, the Terriers looked dominate in the first half and took a early 1-0 lead on a goal from leading scorer Madison Clemens at the 11:14 mark.
After the goal, the Big Green settled in and was able to get the equalizer from Libby Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.). Classmate Emma Brush (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) dribbled deep into the corner and with a cut back dropped the ball to a open Hamlin at the top of the 18-yard box. Hamlin simply drilled the ball past, BU's Andrea Green to tie the game at 1-1 in the 23rd minute.
Dartmouth hits the road for an Ivy League game at Columbia on Saturday (Oct. 20). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. in New York.
