Krausert Lifts Warhawks to 10th Straight Win
Carina Krausert scored on a free kick in the 17th minute to lift the 16th ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks (13-2, 6-0) are winners of ten in a row and boast a 27-game Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season winning streak. The Titans (7-6-1, 3-1-0) came into the contest with their best conference start since 2001.
The Warhawks tested Titan goalkeeper Nina Muzi early with two shots on goal. After a foul on the Titans in their defensive third, Carina Krausert took the free kick from about 25-yards out. Krausert sent the ball into the box and it snuck into the right half of the goal to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Krausert almost made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute but consecutive shots were saved by Muzi. The Titans battled back and put three straight shots on net, but seasoned veteran Jordan Myers saved all three.
It continued to be a battle of goalkeepers as Muzi made three saves, and Myers two, in the final sixteen minutes of the first half. At the end of the first 45 minutes, the Warhawks outshot the Titans 9-8.
Possession tilted strongly in favor of UW-Whitewater in the second half. The Warhawks fired nine shots before the Titans notched one. Two of the Warhawks' early shots were on goal and Sarah Sedlar added a rocket later in the half that Muzi saved. UW-Whitewater went on to outshoot UW-Oshkosh 19-10 in the game.
Myers was brilliant in goal recording five saves and her eighth shutout of the season, 30th of her career. Across the field Mazi was impressive as well, recording 10 saves. "I thought their goalkeeper played very well. I was happy with the opportunities we created," UW-Whitewater coach Ryan Quamme stated after the game.
Quamme added, "I was very proud with how we played and we now control our own destiny in the WIAC."
The Warhawks host the University of Wisconsin-Stout Saturday at 6 pm at Fiskum Field. If UW-Whitewater wins they earn at least a share of their fifth consecutive WIAC regular season title. The win would also be the eleventh in a row for the Warhawks, tying a school record set back in 2003.
