Kucera Header Leads Iowa State Past SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Junior defender Theresa Kucera picked the perfect time to score her first goal of the season, as the Omaha, Neb., native headed in the game-winning goal in the Iowa State soccer team’s 2-1 win over South Dakota State Friday. Kucera’s goal was the fifth of her career but her first since shifting to the Cyclone defense this season.
With the win the Cyclones improved to 6-3 overall on the season, and all three of their losses have come to teams that entered tonight still unbeaten.
Kucera’s goal came off an assist from sophomore Kaeli Flaska. With the assist, Flaska has produced at least a point in three straight games. Flaska scored a goal in Iowa State’s previous match and dished out an assist in the Cyclones’ win over DePaul on Sept. 7.
Junior forward Jennifer Dominguez gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead with her fifth goal of the season 3:26 into the second half. With the goal, Dominguez matched her career-high output in season goals. The Lubbock, Texas, native notched five goals in 2011.
Junior Brittany Morgan provided the assist on the Cyclones’ opener. Morgan has now registered assists in back-to-game games and Dominguez has fired four goals in her last four matches.
South Dakota State (1-5-1 overall) quickly leveled the score at one with its own goal just over four minutes after Dominguez grabbed the opener.
The Cyclones outshot the Jackrabbits 12-11 and also had six corner kicks to South Dakota State’s two.
Iowa State split time at goalkeeper. Junior Maddie Jobe played the first half and recorded a pair of saves. Sophomore Andrea Swanson played the final 45 minutes of the match and also notched two stops. Swanson earned the win, and her season mark stands at 1-0.
Senior Megan Longoboardi led the Cyclones in shots with a career-high four.
Iowa State returns home for its next match. The Cyclones meet Milwaukee Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at the ISU Soccer Complex.
