Lady Bulldogs Upset Alma, 3-2, in Conference Opener
ALMA, Mich. – The Adrian Collegewomen's soccer team handed the defending MIAA champions Alma College its first loss of the season as the Lady Bulldogs were victorious with a score of 3-2. Adrian improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Scots drop to 4-1 and 0-1 in league play.
Prior to today's match, Alma had not given up a goal all season. The Lady Bulldogs scored three, courtesy of sophomore Sam Barker who scored twice and freshman Erin Weide who earned her third goal of the season.
Adrian came out with a mission in the first half, where they scored all three goals.
"Give the girls a lot of credit," said head coach Ali Alamdari. "We are starting to put pieces together and at times we were unstoppable. Time management was good and it was an all-around good effort."
The Lady Bulldogs started the scoring spree in the 8th minute when Barker found Weide in the center of the box. Barker followed shortly after in the 11th minute with a goal of her own as she flew past the defense en route to Adrian's second score of the day.
The Weide-Barker connection continued when Weide made a nice cross from the 14-yard line to the center of the box to Barker who would place the ball in the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Alma mustered up two goals in the second half in the 70th and 89th minute, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Adrian College was hitting on all cylinders.
"It was the first time this season that our defense possessed and attacked," said Alamdari. "(Chayna) Wallace was outstanding." Wallace accumulated a game-high eight saves.
It's a huge win and a definite confidence booster, but the four-year veteran coach understands to take the season game by game.
"This year, it's a double-round robin," mentioned Alamdari. "We still have 15 more conference games. We went into the game thinking that nobody was going to win the conference and nobody was going to lose and we left with the same mind set."
