Lady Cardinals smash records in win
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team rolled to the most convincing victory in the five year history of the program with an 11-0 win over visiting Texas Southern in a non-conference game Sunday.
Kimmy Albeno set school single-game records for points (seven) and goals (three) as the Lady Cardinals set a mark for most goals scored in a game, breaking the mark of seven set earlier this season in a 7-0 win over Grambling State.
Kristin Bos had two goals and two assists for Lamar, Lorna Maudslay had two goals and an assist, Lisa Hance had a goal and two assists, while Alejandra Amador, Annie Dernehl and Grace Bowman each had one goal. Lisa Topping tied a school record with three assists.
Jennifer Gibbs made three saves for her second consecutive shutout. Gibbs tied her own school record with her shutout of the season and extended her school mark of nine career shutouts.
The win capped off a solid weekend at home for the Lady Cardinals (3-3-1), who posted a 4-0 victory over Southern on Friday night.
“We’re excited about the two wins because it puts us back to .500,” Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. “We’re pleased that we got a lot of different people on the scoresheet.”
The Lady Cardinals (3-3-1) took control early, rolling to a 7-0 lead at halftime. Lamar had a 34-9 advantage in total shots, and a 19-3 edge in shots on goal.
Rebecca Hajny made eight saves for Texas Southern (0-8-0).
Lamar hits the road for five straight contests, starting Friday at 13th-ranked Pepperdine.
“We’ve got to get over our phobia of playing on the road,” Hardman said, referring to Lamar’s 0-3-1 mark away from the Lamar Soccer Complex. “We have two games in California before opening conference play with three straight road games. We have to play better away from home.”
