Lady Cyclones Force 1-1 Tie With Pacers
October 5, 2011
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (October 1, 2011) – The Marywood Pacers (4-6-1, 3-1-1 CSAC) traveled to Cyclone Field on a balmy October afternoon to take on the Cyclones (4-3-1, 2-0-1 CSAC) in a conference matchup Saturday. The game opened up quick with a couple scoring chances for both teams, with tough, physical defense from both sides. Wet field conditions made for a lot of slips and falls, making a definite impact on the game.
Senior Caitlin Veverka’s (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) effort on defense made the difference in the first half chasing down Marywood’s Erin Jones, sliding to knock the ball out from under her feet. The ball was deflected, enabling Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) to make the save, after which interference was called on the Marywood College. The first half ended with the score knotted at 0-0.
At little more than twenty minutes into the second half, the first goal of the contest was scored when Laura Potter (Gilboa, N.Y./Gilboa-Conesville) received a cross from the left side to the top of the box from Brittany Overland (Andover, N.J./Newton) and drove it past the goalie into the right side of the net.
Soon after, the Pacers evened the score when Centenary goalie Alyssa Hackelberg was caught playing too high outside of the box as Erin Jones passed down the field to Olivia Habicht, who dropped the ball behind Hackelberg and into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
In a frantically paced first overtime, Jones had an open Centenary net but missed wide for the Pacers. The Cyclones retaliated with a Courtney Flanagan (Hackettstown, N.J./Pope John XXIII) shot from about fifty yards that was just over the net to force a second overtime.
The second overtime saw more desperate action to put the game away by both sides, but could only manage four shots between the two, Marywood edging out Centenary 3-1 in this regard to finish with a 1-1 draw.
The Lady Cyclones move to 4-3-1 overall, and 2-0-1 in conference play and return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia Biblical at 4:00pm.
