Lady Scots Hold on until the Second Half, Lose 2-0 to Maryville
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Saturday night, in near-perfect, cool weather, the Covenant Lady Scots soccer team competed against the “other” Lady Scots, the ones from Maryville College. The game was extremely close for the first half, but in the second half, Maryville had two great opportunities to score and capitalized on both to claim the 2-0 victory.
The first half was mostly a defensive game for Covenant. Maryville had 7 shots to Covenant’s 2. Our Lady Scots defense held tightly together with Hannah Bales earning 2 saves and the defense helped block many of the rest. Freshman Bethany Logan came close on one attempt but sailed her shot slightly too high.
The second half held two scores by Maryville. In the 67th minute, right after the game’s first booking- a yellow card issued to Maryville’s Jordan Chase- Hannah Rector found the ball in front of the net and sent it past Bales from close range. The game remained intense, though, with hard tackles and your typical heated fights over every loose ball. It wasn’t until the 82nd minute that Maryville’s Phoebe Leo scored her first goal of the season to push her team’s lead to 2-0. The goal came after a save by Bales left her on the ground, unable to stop Maryville’s attack, again from close range.
Covenant has had a rough season so far, but they are always intense on the field. With a record of 1-6-1 now, the ladies play Agnes Scott College for their next game at 5:30 p.m. at home on Friday, September 30.
