Lamar blanked by UC Davis
Sept. 21, 2012
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Freshman Bailey Fontenot tied a Lamar record with 18 saves, but the Lady Cardinals dropped a 4-0 decision to UC Davis at the UC Riverside Tournament on Friday.
Fontenot’s 18 saves equaled the mark set by Kelsie Binetti in a 4-0 loss to Nebraska on Oct. 12, 2007, Lamar’s first season of soccer.
The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for Lamar (4-5-1). The Lady Cardinals were outshot 31-13 for the game.
UC Davis (5-3-1) took a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Lexi Poppoff and Haley Hughes. Taylor Duffner made it 3-0 6:48 into the second half before Sienna Drizin closed out the scoring with 1:01 remaining in the game. Taylor Jern and Kathleen Brandl shared the shutout.
Kimmy Albeno led the Lamar offense with five shots.
“We had our chances,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We made some mistakes and they capitalized on them.”
Cervantes praised the efforts of Kristin Bos, Albeno, Jannet Hernandez, Mari Olastuen and Morgan Burden.
“We battled the whole way,” he said. “We worked hard and never gave up.”
The Lady Cardinals return to action Sunday when they take on host UC Riverside at 3 p.m. Central.
