Lamar blanks Southeastern Louisiana
Oct. 7, 2012
HAMMOND, La. - Taylor Mitchell's goal midway through the second half lifted the Lamar University women's soccer team to a 1-0 Southland Conference win at Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday.
Mitchell took a pass from Jannet Hernandez and drilled a shot past Southeastern Louisiana goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus into the upper left corner from about 18 yards out for her fourth goal of the season.
“Jannet did a great job of creating the opportunity and Taylor finished it with a beautiful shot,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “It was a pretty goal.”
Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot made seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season as she ran her scoreless streak to 225:47.
The win was the second straight for the Lady Cardinals (6-7-1 overall, 2-1 Southland). All three of Lamar’s Southland Conference games have ended in a 1-0 score.
“We’re playing good defense right now,” Cervantes said. “We’re getting some good opportunities on offense, and we were able to capitalize on one today.”
Bockhaus made five saves for Southeastern Louisiana (7-6-1, 1-2-1).
Lamar returns home for a pair of Southland Conference games next weekend. The Lady Cardinals host Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday and Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Sunday. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715 or visit LamarCardinals.com.
