Lamar edges Oral Roberts in overtime
Oct. 19, 2012
TULSA, Okla. – Jannet Hernandez scored on a penalty kick just 58 seconds into overtime to lift Lamar to a 2-1 victory over host Oral Roberts in a Southland Conference women’s soccer game Friday night.
Lamar was awarded the penalty kick after Oral Roberts goalkeeper Helen Erb pulled down a Lamar attacker in the penalty area. Hernandez made no mistake in putting the ball in the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season as Lamar (9-7-1 overall, 5-1-0 Southland) moved past the Golden Eagles (10-5-2, 4-2-0) for sole possession of second place in the conference.
The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half. Oral Roberts struck first after intermission as Whitney Booth scored on a pass from Keller Kayla just 8:25 into the second half. Lamar tied things at 1 with 11:32 remaining on the second half as Kristin Bos converted a pass from Stefanie Miroballi. Bos’ ninth goal of the season ties the school record for goals in a season set earlier this year by Kimmy Albeno.
Bailey Fontenot made four saves for her ninth win, tying the single-season mark set last season by Jennifer Gibbs. The nine wins by the Lady Cardinals equal the program mark set last season, while Lamar’s five-game winning streak is the longest in the six-year history of the program.
Lamar puts its win streak on the line at 1 p.m. Sunday when it travels to Stephen F. Austin for a battle for first place in the conference. The Ladyjacks are unbeaten in conference play this season.
Following Sunday’s game, Lamar returns home to close out the regular season by hosting Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. Friday. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.
