Lamar falls to SFA
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to defending champion Stephen F. Austin in a rematch of last year’s Southland Conference championship game Friday night.
“We had a good game plan, and I think we executed it very well,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes. “Unfortunately, we let in a couple of soft goals and couldn’t get out of the hole we dug.”
Chelsea Raymond had two goals for SFA (7-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 Southland), while Melissa Gaudet also scored for the Ladyjacks, who improved to 8-0 all-time against Lamar.
Jannet Hernandez had the best scoring opportunity for Lamar (3-6-1, 0-2-1), when she beat SFA goalkeeper Lacey Lee late in the second half, only to see her shot kept out of the net by a diving SFA defender.
“When things aren’t going well, plays like that tend to happen,” said Cervantes, who saw his team’s scoreless streak extended to 376 minutes, 50 seconds. “Things just tend to snowball.”
Morgan Glick made one save in the first half for SFA, as she picked up the win in goal. Lee played the second half, as the SFA goalkeepers shared the shutout. Bailey Fontenot made six saves for Lamar.
Lamar returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday as it hosts Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference game.
“We have to keep at it and see what happens Sunday,” Cervantes said. “We have to fight through this.”
Sunday’s game is Girl Scouts Day, with all Girls Scouts in uniform receiving free admission. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.
