BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team had three players earn second-team All-Southland Conference honors, the conference announced today.

 

Representing the Lady Cardinals on the second team are freshman forward Jannet Hernandez (Houston, Texas), sophomore midfielder Kristin Bos (Valencia, Calif.) and junior defender Amber Thornhill (Katy, Texas). The Lady Cardinals (10-8-1 overall, 6-2-0 Southland), posted their best-ever finish in conference play by placing second.

 

Hernandez is third on the Lady Cardinals in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Hernandez was Lamar’s leading scorer in conference with play with 10 points on four goals and two assists, good for fourth place in the conference scoring race. Hernandez was the only freshman named to the first or second team.

 

Bos set Lamar single-season records for goals (10), points (23), game-winning goals (four), shots (73) and shots on goal (44). She ranks fourth in the conference in overall scoring and is tied for the conference lead in game-winning goals.

 

Thornhill, who was named to the second team for the second straight season, had a solid season on defense for the Lady Cardinals, playing a team-high 1,671 minutes while helping Lamar finish second in defense in conference play, allowing just six goals in eight games. Thornhill also contributed a goal and an assist on offense.

 

Sophomore forward Kimmy Albeno (Bellflower, Calif.), senior midfielder Lisa Topping (Leyland, England), sophomore defender Alejandra Amador (Seal Beach, Calif.) and sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot (Beaumont, Texas) were Lamar players receiving honorable-mention status.

 

“These players deserve all of the accolades they receive,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “They are good players and team leaders.”

 

Lamar, which earned a first-round bye in the Southland Conference Tournament, plays in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at McNeese State against the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal contest between No. 3 seed Southeastern Louisiana and No. 6 seed McNeese State. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday. The tournament winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

 

Tickets for Friday’s semifinal doubleheader are $10. Tickets for Sunday’s championship game are $8 for adults and $6 for youths. Children younger than 5 and students at Southland Conference institutions are admitted free with a valid ID.
