Oct. 10, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team has a two-game homestand this weekend that could play a key factor in the Lady Cardinals’ bid for a spot in next month’s Southland Conference Tournament.
Lamar (6-7-1 overall, 2-1 conference) hosts Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday and Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Lady Cardinals enter the weekend in a three-way tie for third in the nine-team league. The top six teams qualify for the tournament.
“Both games should be tough,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “Right now, we have to focus on Friday and take care of business. After that, we will get ready for Sunday.”
Central Arkansas (9-4-1, 1-2-1) comes in off a 1-0 double-overtime win over McNeese State on Sunday. Before that, the Bears dropped a 1-0 loss to conference-leading Stephen F. Austin on Friday.
Adriana Lucer leads the Bears with 30 points on 14 goals and two assists. Lucer has four-game-winning goals.
Northwestern State (5-7-1, 0-2-1) has arguably played the toughest conference schedule this season. After opening with a 0-0 tie against Central Arkansas, the Demons have dropped 3-0 decisions to Oral Roberts and Stephen F. Austin, the two teams at the top of the standings.
Yanci Johnson leads Northwestern State in scoring with 13 points on six goals and one assist.
Lamar is 2-2-1 in the all-time series with both teams.
The Lady Cardinals are led by Kimmy Albeno, whose eight goals this season are tied for the single-season record set last year by Lisa Hance. Albeno’s 19 points are two behind the record of 21 set by Hance last season as well.
Kristin Bos is second on Lamar in scoring this fall with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot rides back-to-back shutouts into the weekend and owns a current scoreless streak of 225:46.
