Lamar silences Southern
BEAUMONT, Texas – Kimmy Albeno tied the Lamar career record for points to highlight the Cardinals’ 2-0 victory over visiting Southern University in a non-conference women’s soccer game Friday.
Albeno collect career point 51 when she scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 28:09 mark of the first half, depositing a rebound behind Southern goalkeeper Kerrin Hall. Albeno, a junior, equaled the mark set by Lisa Hance, who played for Lamar from 2008 through 2011. It was ALbeno’s team-leading fourth goal of the season.
“It was nice to see Kimmy tie the record,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “I know there’s more to come.”
Lamar (3-2-0) dominated the Jaguars, outshooting Southern 29-2, but Hall stymied the Cardinals on several occasions, making 14 saves.
“Their goalkeeper played a great game, but we have to finish our chances,” Cervantes said. “We hit the post a few times and put some great opportunities wide.”
Kristin Bos made it 2-0 10:29 into the second half, taking a nifty feed from Mari Olastuen and putting it behind Hall. It6 was the first goal of the season for Bos, who was second on the team with 11 goals last season. Bos had a season-high eight shots for Lamar.
“I told Kristin to be more aggressive, and she was tonight,” Cervantes said. “She had a great game.”
Bailey Fontenot made two saves for her first shutout of the season and seventh of her career.
“I thought we played our best game of the season,” Cervantes said. “We were able to control the game and limited their chances.”
Cervantes plans to give the team three days off before preparing for the final non-conference games of the season. Lamar is at Rice at 7 p.m. Friday before taking on Massachusetts at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at Tomball High School in Tomball, Texas.
