Lamar takes aim at second place
Oct. 24, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team can clinch second place in the Southland Conference with a win or tie when it hosts Sam Houston State in the regular-season finale for both teams at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lamar Soccer Complex.
Finishing second would give Lamar (9-8-1 overall, 5-2 Southland) a first-round bye in next month’s Southland Conference Tournament at McNeese State. Sam Houston State (7-9-1, 4-2-1) needs a win to have a chance at finishing second. Southeastern Louisiana also has a chance at finishing second in the conference. The Lions, who are 4-2-1 in the conference, host Northwestern State on Friday.
A victory would also give the Lady Cardinals a school-record 10 wins this season.
“This could be the biggest game in the history of the soccer program at Lamar,” Lady Cardinals coach Orlando Cervantes said. “Both teams have something to play for. It should be a very intense contest.”
Kimmy Albeno and Kristin Bos each have a school-record nine goals for Lamar this season. Albeno has 21 points, tying the school mark set by Lisa Hance last season. Goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot leads the Southland Conference with 97 saves.
Katie Ferrara leads Sam Houston State with four goals and eight points.
Friday’s game will be Lamar’s annual Pink Out game in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer research. Lamar fans are encouraged to wear pink. In addition, Friday will be senior night.
“We are excited to be at home, especially on a Friday night,” Cervantes said of his squad that is 6-0-1 at the Lamar Soccer Complex this season. “We definitely need a lot of fans to come out and support us.”
Pairings for the conference tournament will be announced Friday night’s game. The tournament is set for Nov. 1-4 at McNeese State.
