Lamar's home unbeaten string ends at 12
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team saw its 12-game home unbeaten streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Oral Roberts in a Southland Conference game Sunday.
Oral Roberts (7-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 conference) scored three goals within a span of 6:01 late in the first half to wrest control of the game away from Lamar (3-5-0, 0-1-0).
“We haven’t been able to put together a full 90-minute game yet this season,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “There’s no consistency. You can’t let up for a minute. We did for six minutes, and it cost us.”
The Golden Eagles got on the board with 9:23 remaining in the first half when Jordan Parsons headed the ball past Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot. Just 63 seconds later Kayla Keller took advantage of a Lamar defensive lapse to score an unassisted goal to make it 2-0. Parsons scored her second of the game on a breakaway with 3:22 left in the half to make it 3-0.
“I’m [proud of the way we battled back. There’s no quit in this team,” Cervantes said. “However, we can’t keep falling into an early hole and try to dig ourselves out.”
Maddie Rhodes made three saves for the shutout. Fontenot made six saves for Lamar before being replaced by Zoey Stephenson, who made one save over the final 7:33.
“I tried to give some of our players a rest in the second half,” Cervantes said. “We’ve got a tough week ahead of us.”
Lamar is at Northwestern State at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a makeup of Friday’s washout. The Cardinals then return home to host defending Southland Conference champion Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Friday before welcoming Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. Sunday.
“We have to be ready,” Cervantes said. “There are no pushovers in the conference any more. We have to be at the top of our game.”
