Lamontagne's OT Goal Lifts Orange By Vermont
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Freshman Alex Lamontagne (Whitby, Ontario) scored in the 102nd minute to give the Syracuse women’s soccer team a 3-2 double-overtime victory against Vermont at the Colgate Nike Classic. The win extended its unbeaten streak to three and improved its record to 3-1-2.
The Orange dominated the overtime sessions. Syracuse recorded five shots in the first extra period but Vermont goalkeeper Ally Ramos recorded four saves to keep the game tied. Lamontagne’s goal came less than three minutes into the second overtime. The ball was played long down the left side of the field. Lamontagne took possession of the ball and dribbled into the box where she fired her shot into the right corner of the net for the first game-winning goal of her career.
Syracuse was the more dangerous team in the first half as it controlled the tempo of the game. Junior Maya Pitts (Montclair, N.J.) put the Orange on the scoreboard in the eighth minute. Her initial shot went off the crossbar and ricocheted right back to Pitts, who headed the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Syracuse’s second goal also came off a rebound in the 14th minute. Ramos stopped a shot by sophomore Stephanie Skilton (Auckland, New Zealand) but couldn’t control the ball. The rebound went back to Skilton, who put her shot in the right corner of the goal for her team-leading fifth goal of the year and 14th of her career, which puts her in a tie for eighth place on Syracuse’s career goals scored list.
Vermont (2-3-0) tallied both of its goals in the second half. The first came in the 56th minute when Rylee Osgood passed the ball to Sarah Martin, who took one touch before shooting across the box into the net. Syracuse continued to apply offensive pressure but couldn’t take advantage of its scoring opportunities. The Catamounts tied the score and forced overtime in the 84th minute when Jessica Silverman lofted a shot from 22 yards out into the right corner of the goal.
Syracuse outshot Vermont, 30-8, and had five corner kicks to one for the Catamounts. Orange goalkeeper MacKenzie Moranz (Pittsfield, N.Y.) recorded two saves in the victory, while Ramos had 15.
“Obviously our finishing left much to be desired,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “I was very disappointed that we had to go into overtime. We had 11 shots in the first half and they didn’t really have a dangerous opportunity. But we managed to let them back in the game. (Going into overtime) we changed the way we played a little bit and we talked about calming down, keeping possession and putting away the chances that we had.”
Syracuse returns to Hamilton on Thursday, Sept. 11 to face Colgate at 7 p.m.
