Late First Half Goal Stands Tall in 1-0 Win for Detroit
BOX SCORE
RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Titans (6-2-1) won 1-0 over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (2-5-1) Sunday afternoon on the strength of a goal from senior Alexandra Suschak at the 43:48 mark of the match.
It was the second straight win for the Titans after cruising to a 6-0 win over Madonna on Thursday. The victory also marked the first-ever triumph for Detroit over the EKU program after losses in all three previous games.
Suschak's second goal of the season was an unassisted tally off a corner kick from junior Rebekah Dornbos. The ball from Dornbos was kicked around in the 18-yard box and Suschak found the ball and played it into the net with the help of a deflection off an EKU defender.
“I don't think it was one of our better games, but we could have made it easier had we finished on more of our chances,” said head coach Mike Lupenec. “We have to get our attitude right about putting teams away and capitalizing on our opportunities. Scoring is crucial and we need to be better in the final offensive third in order to be successful.”
Detroit had 10 shots in the first half compared to just three for EKU. UDM also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Alyssa Riley - Detroit's second leading scorer with five goals and an assist on the year - had a team-high six shots, including a few crosses that were headed wide of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nora Abolins recorded her third shutout of the year needing to make just two saves in the victory. The blanking was also the sixth of the year for the red, white and blue.
The Titans will head to East Lansing on Wednesday to play at Michigan State in the last non-conference game before opening Horizon League play next Sunday against Butler at Titan Field. The game against the Spartans is set for Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
