Late-Game Goal Lifts Rangers to Overtime Win
Lakewood, Colorado: In a game that required extra minutes the Regis University Rangers Men’s Soccer team slid by the Colorado Christian University Cougars (4-5) with a late-game goal to propel them to an overall record of 7-1 and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. This 3-2 double-overtime victory moves the current win-streak to four in a row.
This RMAC battle began early in the game when the Cougars converted a penalty kick in the 16th minute of play but the Rangers would take less than a minute to even the playing field back at 1-1. In the 17th minute, senior forward Martin Maybin (Belfast, Northern Ireland) scored the equalizer from inside the 18-yard box with senior midfielder Arnthor Kristinsson (Akranes, Iceland) tallying the assist.
Play settled after an exciting beginning but it was Regis with a number of scoring opportunities continuing to fire shots at Cougar goalkeeper Brandon Eide. The score remained at a tie heading into halftime and the Rangers opened the second half right where they left off challenging the CCU defense. It was the Cougars that scored the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute but RU quickly responded.
In the 77th minute, freshman midfielder Taylor Wiebke (Overland Park, Kansas) balanced the scoring for the second time in the match. With regulation time winding down and both teams looking to end the game the final whistle blew and the match headed into overtime with the scored tied at 2-2.
The score would remain level throughout the first ten-minute overtime period but as time was expiring with the end of the game nearing in the second overtime period Maybin scored the game-winner in the 106th minute putting a shot past Eide from inside the six-yard box.
Maybin reached a career milestone from scoring his eighth and ninth goals of the season tonight. Maybin broke the record for most goals scored in a career; he began the game with 44, the record stood at 45.
RU offense was rolling in tonight’s game, the Rangers outshot the Cougars 30-8 with half of them on goal and won the corner kick advantage 12-1. Goalkpeers Connor Adkisson (Federal Way, Washington) and Christian Nicolosi (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) both played 45 minutes between the posts. Adkisson started the game, allowed one goal and did not have to make any saves. Nicolosi allowed one goal and made three saves.
The Rangers are back on their home pitch Friday, October 3rd at 4 p.m. as they host UC-Colorado Springs.
