Late goal dooms Patriot Women in 2-1 loss
CHARLESTON, SC – A goal by Sidney Doherty with 4:27 remaining proved to be the deciding score as Charleston Southern University rallied to claim a rainy 2-1 victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 10) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (2-13-0) will play its final road match of the season at South Carolina State University on Friday at 7 p.m. The next home match for FMU will be Oct. 20 against USC Upstate at 7 p.m.
Despite battling precipitation and 20 first-half shots by the Buccaneers, Francis Marion left for the locker room at halftime tied 0-0. FMU senior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry equaled her career-high for saves (13) in the opening 45 minutes. She would add two more in the second half to set a new personal best of 15 saves.
Francis Marion junior Tori Whigham gave the Patriots a 1-0 advantage at the 63:00 mark when she received a pass from junior Kelly Anthony and scored from eight yards out. It was Whigham’s fourth goal of the season and Anthony’s third assist.
That lead held up until the 76th minute when Anna Sells slid in the keeper’s box to knock in a cross from Chelsea Frankeny. Sells then fed Doherty for the match-winning score in the 86th minute.
FMU senior Arianna Pierner and junior Breanna Henderson each had opportunities to tie the score in the final three minutes, but both their attempts went high over the crossbar.
Charleston Southern (4-5-2) outshot the Patriots 36-16 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Haley Bigler led Francis Marion with four shots, while Anthony had three.
O’Berry, currently ranked fourth in Division I for total saves, pushed her school-record career tally pass the 400 mark to 401 – second-best among active NCAA Division I keepers.
