Late Goal Lifts Richmond Past Saint Louis
RICHMOND, Va. – Katie Walsh made seven saves for Saint Louis, but Richmond managed to score a goal in the 81st minute for a 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over the Billikens Sunday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
Richmond improved to 7-7-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play, while Saint Louis slipped to 3-8-3, 1-3-1.
Walsh kept the Billikens in the game following intermission, making six of her seven saves as Richmond amassed a 13-2 advantage in total shots during the final 45 minutes.
The Spiders finally broke through, however, when Becca Wann, assisted by Ashley Williams, scored from close range at the 80:40 mark for her seventh goal of the season.
Alli Reimer had two shots on goal for Saint Louis.
“Despite the loss, our team played great and with a lot of heart,” head coach Kat Mertz said. “I’m proud of their continuing effort.”
The Billikens return home to take on A-10 foe Saint Joseph’s Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. The match has been designated as the Kicks Against Breast Cancer Game. Saint Louis will wear pink jerseys that will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Additional donations for the American Cancer Society will be accepted throughout the game.
