Late goal lifts Skyhawks to 2-1 win at Augustana
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — An own goal scored when Sara Egbom's shot deflected off of an opposing defender with 1:44 remaining in regulation lifted No. 7 Fort Lewis (2-0-0 overall) to a 2-1 win over Augustana (S.D.) (0-2-0) today. The goal was originally credited to Egbom, but was later changed to an own goal for the Vikings.
“I was hoping we would have a tough game on this trip,” said fifth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke, whose team beat St. Cloud State 4-0 on Friday. “They had a good plan against us, but we were tough.”
After a scoreless first half, the Skyhawks needed just 44 seconds to grab a 1-0 lead on Hayley Hollenga’s third goal of the young season.
The Vikings answered back 12 minutes later when Mackenzie Trom netted her second goal of the season at 57:44.
Sophomore goalie Amanda Raso made five saves for the Skyhawks to improve to 2-0-0 on the year. She stopped a pair of shots in the 78th minute to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Augie’s Amanda Wagner stopped seven FLC shots.
Fort Lewis outshot Augie 17-9 overall, 11-6 in shots on goal.
The Skyhawks continue their nonconference play next weekend with a pair of neutral-site games at Colorado Mesa’s Walker Field in Grand Junction. Fort Lewis plays Dixie State (Utah) (1-1-0) at 4 p.m. Friday and Grand Canyon (Ariz.) (0-2-0) at 2 p.m. Sunday.
