Late Goal Propels Army Past Iona WSOC
WEST POINT, NY - A goal in the 82nd minute helped push Army past the Iona College women's soccer this evening at West Point during the 2017 season opener for both programs.
In the effort, Tiffany Martinez posted nine saves throughout a full 90 minutes in net for the Maroon & Gold (0-1). Her counterpart, Sydney Cassalia, was credited with two saves to preserve the shutout for the Black Knights (1-0).
The lone tally of the evening, a game that was delayed due to the local weather, came with just over 81 minutes expired as Lauryn Westman finished a Sydney Witham feed on the right side of the box with a finish on the inside post. The goal was enough for Army to hold on for the victory that included advantages in shots (20-5) and corner kicks (5-0).
Martinez nearly split saves throughout her 90 minutes of action by making four saves in the opening half followed by five in the last 45 minutes. Christine Rebus led the Gaels with two shots including one on-target while Julia Campagna put her only shot on net to force a save from Cassalia.
Iona returns to the pitch on Sunday with a trip to Stony Brook for a 1:00 pm non-conference match. The first three games of the season for the Maroon & Gold come on the road before the home-opener on Sunday, August 27 against LIU Brooklyn.
