Late goal pushes Oberlin past Heidelberg
OBERLIN - Controlling the possession and being the aggressor for most of the game, the Heidelberg University men's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net, and it came back to haunt them when Oberlin broke through in the 89th minute to break the scoreless tie.
The first period opened up with the Student Princes fighting, getting six shots and two corner kicks before the Yeomen recorded their first shot. The 'Berg ended up out-shooting Oberlin 12-3 in the first half, but despite that edge, they entered halftime knotted at zero.
Things looked to be going much of the same way in the second half, as the two teams had a defensive battle that seemed like it was going to last throughout until the 89th minute. Junior John Ingham broke through and found the back of the net, giving the Yeomen the lead and ultimately the win.
Hamid Shariff led the Student Princes with six shots with two of those being on goal, while freshman Alexis Mendoza recorded four shots with three on goal.
Heidelberg out-shot Oberlin 24-10 in the match, also having 10 of those on goal compared to the Yeomen's 5.
The Student Prince's record fell to 3-4-2 with the defeat and will have the weekend off before traveling to Denison University on Wednesday, October 1. That non-conference match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
