Late Goal Sends Cal Poly to 2-2 Draw
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women’s soccer team scored twice inside the opening six minutes of Friday evening’s matchup versus Cal State Northridge, but Matador forward Stephanie Galarze produced a goal with two seconds remaining in regulation to help the visitors salvage a 2-2 overtime draw at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Mustang sophomore forward Sara Lancaster needed just 69 seconds to put Cal Poly in front on Friday, heading a cross from freshman forward Sara Epps past Cal State Northridge senior goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo from two yards away.
Less than four minutes later, senior forward Cici Kobinski dribbled 30 yards on to the Matador penalty area before cutting in at the left post and slotting a second shot past Jacobo.
Epps nearly gave Big West Conference-leading Cal Poly (7-5-2, 4-0-1) a three-goal cushion in the 16th minute, but pounded her first blocked attempt on goal off the left post.
The Matadors (5-4-5, 2-1-1), who forced Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti into 10 saves and outshot the Mustangs, 28-16, climbed back into the matchup during the 55th minute as freshman midfielder Hayley Greep redirected senior forward Marissa Miller’s initial attempt over the goal line.
Cal State Northridge, which racked up 16 shots during the second half, eventually found the equalizing goal in the 90th minute as Galarze corralled a deflected pass from Miller and fired past Giannetti from eight yards away.
Cal Poly’s best chance to snag all three points during overtime came in the 102nd minute, but Lancaster over hit a pass to freshman forward Elise Krieghoff who was streaking toward the left post.
Despite the draw, Cal Poly maintained its grip on first place in the Big West standings with 13 points. UC Irvine (8-8-0, 4-1-0), which defeated Pacific earlier Friday, sits second with 12 points.
Cal Poly concludes its two-match home stand on Sunday, Oct. 14 against Hawai’i at 12 noon.
