Late Goal Stuns Warhawks
Less than 24 hours after a gritty 2-1 win over Loras College on the road, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team was back at it. This time their opponent, North Park University, did what the Warhawks have done so many times this season - scored a late goal to win. The Vikings scored the only goal of the match with ten seconds remaining to defeat UW-Whitewater Thursday night in Chicago, Illinois. The eleventh ranked Warhawks fall to 11-2 while the Vikings improve to 8-2. This is the fifth consecutive meeting between these two teams in which one shutout the other. The Vikings hold the edge 3-1-1 during that span.
The Vikings started the match quickly by firing off four shots in the first six minutes of play. The Warhawks responded with shots in the 13th and 16th minutes, but neither were on target.
North Park continued to pressure the Warhawk defense with six more shots in the first half, but the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) stepped up early in the second half to make two of his three saves, but it didn't slow the Viking attack. The host continued to spray shots from all angles, and although most weren't on goal, they retained much of the momentum.
Jordan Wilkins (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) had perhaps the best shot of the game for the Warhawks, putting a header on goal in the 85th minute, but Chris Tomuta was there to make the save for North Park.
After a foul on the Warhawks in North Park's defensive half, the Vikings sent a long free kick towards the goal. Freshman forward Carel Kawele Kuzona gained possession of the ball and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced back to Pedram Tahmi-Masoleh, the Vikings leading scorer. Tahmi-Masoleh buried it in the back of the net with ten seconds left and the Vikings went on to win.
North Park outshot the Warhawks 22-10 but only four of those shots were on goal.
After playing six games in ten days the Warhawks will take some much needed time off. UW-Whitewater will return to the field on October 7 when they host Central College in a 4 pm match at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
