Late Goals Lead SMU To 3-3 Draw At Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – A pair of goals in the final eight minutes of regulation led the SMU women's soccer team to a 3-3 draw at Memphis Thursday night. Freshman Hannah Allred netted her second goal of the night in the 82nd minute, before Claire Oates found the eventual equalizing goal in the 88th minute of play to force overtime.
"It was a really good game. A hard-fought game from both teams," SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli said.
With the draw, SMU moved to 4-2-3 (0-0-1 American) on the season, while Memphis moved to 6-3-1 (0-0-1 American). Each team earned one point in American Athletic Conference play.
Down 3-2 with two minutes left in regulation, goalkeeper Catie Brown served a curling free-kick into the box, where Oates got above the Memphis backline and netted a header to force overtime. The 6-foot senior now has three goals on the year, all off of headers, and 23 goals in her career. Brown was credited with an assist, the first of her career.
Tied 2-2, Memphis managed to break the tie late with a header goal in the 84th minute.
In the 82nd minute, Allred knotted the game at 2-2 with her second goal of the night. Following a weak Rachel Ashworth Shepard goal kick, the Mustangs were able to win the ball in the air and gain possession in the attacking third. A perfect header by the SMU backline found the feet of a crashing Allie Thornton, who touched a pass to Isabelle Nashmi up the near wing. From the top, near corner of the 18-yard box, the freshman was able to split a pair of Tiger defenders and find a waiting Allred, who buried the shot.
Memphis opened scoring in the 6th minute, before Allred tied the game, 1-1, four minutes later (10') with her first career goal. Following a Haley Thompson corner kick, the ball bounced loose to the top of the 18-yard box, were Allred turned and fired a first-time shot over the head of Morgan Berg.
Memphis would take a 2-1 lead into halftime after a goal in the 23rd minute.
Nine different Mustangs recorded shots, as SMU recorded season-highs in shots (28) and shots on goal (18). Allred led the Mustangs with six shots, while Allred and Vanessa Valadez each posted four shots on frame.
"We created a lot of scoring chances, more than we had all season. We had to comeback a few times, but I felt really good about our attack. It has been something we have been waiting for and I hope we can build off of it."
Up next, SMU plays at Tulsa on Sunday for the second league match of the season. The game is slated for 1 p.m. CT and can be followed via live stats on SMUMustangs.com.
"We played a lot of minutes and used a lot of legs, so heading into Sunday we will get our rest, get healthy and look to continue our attacking," Petrucelli added.
