Lehigh and Boston U play to 0-0 draw
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women’s soccer team and Boston University played a back-and-forth game, with each team having some strong opportunities, but neither could find the back of the net in a scoreless draw on Saturday. With the tie, the Mountain Hawks’ (5-2-3, 1-0-1 Patriot League) unbeaten streak has reached five. Senior Adrian Vitello had Lehigh’s strongest opportunity of the evening, a first-half shot that hit the left post, while sophomore goalkeeper Sam Miller impressed with eight saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
“We knew it would be two teams who are really good defensively. You would have to get something special to break either team down,” said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. “When we hit the post, that might have been the opportunity to do it. Today was exactly what we expected. I’m proud of the effort, I’m proud of the way we played, but there are a lot of things we can take out of here moving forward.”
A defensive beginning saw each team fire four first-half shots. Miller made four saves for the Mountain Hawks, but the best chance of the half came off the foot of Vitello, whose strike near the top of the box hit the left post in the 20th minute.
The Mountain Hawks began to pick up the pace midway through the second half, firing four of the game’s six shots from the 64th minute through the 81st minute. Lehigh had several strong chances, but weren’t on target. On the other end, Miller made two second-half saves, in the 87th and 88th minutes, to help send the game to overtime.
Miller made two more saves in the first overtime period, but it was sophomore Annika Jansa who made the biggest defensive play in the 105th minute as she headed a shot by Jacki Carty off the line to help preserve the scoreless draw.
Final shots were 16-13 in favor of the Terriers while Boston University held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Miller made eight saves across Boston University’s Amanda Fay, who tallied two.
“I thought we played a really solid game,” said Lambinus. “Both teams were really good defensively , making you earn it. Our back line and Sam played really well. I thought Adrian had a great game; she was all over the field, covering a lot of ground and causing problems.”
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Wednesday when they host Colgate at 7 p.m.
“It doesn’t get any easier with Colgate and Navy next week,” said Lambinus. “We have to work on recovering over the next couple day. We’ll get ready for Colgate, who’s another great team, but a different team. They play a completely different style. It’ll be something we can adapt to.”
