Lehigh and Boston U play to 1-1 tie
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Trailing 1-0 into the second half, senior Darby Wiegand evened the score on the way to a 1-1 tie of defending Patriot League champion Boston University on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the result, both teams move to 2-0-2 in league play this season. Junior Ani Nahapetian impressed in goal, making five saves, four coming in the second half.
"They're an unbelievable team," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "They're organized; they give up less than a goal per game. It was going to take a really good effort to get a result and I thought we had that. We had some chances. They didn't win the league for nothing and they don't have the history for nothing. I'm just happy we were able to play with them for as long as we did and get the point out of it. I think we can take some positives moving forward."
An even first half didn't see the first shot for either side until the 31st minute. Lehigh created the game's first corner kick just over two minutes into the match. Sophomore Madeline Walsh played a dangerous ball into the box, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't get a shot off.
Boston University broke the ice at 30:35 as McKenzie Hollenbaugh made a feed to Erica Kosienski down the left side. She made a move into the box and fired a lefty shot inside the right post to make it 1-0.
The Terriers almost made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, but Nahapetian deflected the ball off the crossbar. Then on the rebound attempt, the Lehigh defense cleared the ball off the goal line to help save a goal.
Boston University recorded four of the first five second-half shots, but Lehigh responded with pressure and it led to the tying score at 65:41. Off a throw in, freshman Grace Correll made a centering feed towards Wiegand. The senior got a piece to help redirect the ball past Terriers' goalie Alyssa Parisi to make it 1-1.
The Mountain Hawks continued to pressure and create more opportunities as Wiegand had a shot on goal in the 72nd minute. Nahapetian came up with a stop about three minutes later, then was called upon to help stop a Boston University scoring rush in the final minute. Junior Emily Korber made two big defensive plays, first blocking a shot, then heading a ball out of harm's way. Terrier Jamie Turchi had a shot on goal as regulation expired, but Nahapetian dove to her left to make the stop and force overtime.
Boston University held a 5-2 shots edge over the two overtime periods as Nahapetian was called upon to make one save. Lehigh also had two shots, but neither side could find the back of the net as the game ended in a draw.
Final shots were 17-8 in favor of Boston University while corner kicks were tied at six. Nahapetian made five saves across Parisi, who had three.
"Without the point, it's a moral victory which isn't what we're looking for," said Lambinus. "We would have liked to get the three points at home and that was definitely our goal, but this game is something we can build off."
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Princeton at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will then return to league play at Loyola next weekend.
