Lehigh and Colgate Play to 1-1 Draw
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's soccer junior Rebecca Van Siclen scored just 2:29 into the game, but Colgate netted the equalizer in the 33rd minute, on the way to a 1-1 tie on Saturday. It was Senior Day for the Mountain Hawks as the program's seven seniors were recognized prior to opening kickoff. Lehigh is now 1-1-2 on the season, 1-0-1 in the South Division ahead of a big matchup at Navy next Saturday.
"We started off really well and played well to start," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "To be honest, the game should have been 2-0 or 3-0 after 30 minutes. The game should have been put away. When you don't put it away and you leave the door open for a good team with a lot of talented players, they take advantage."
Colgate fired the game's first shot just 16 seconds in, but the Mountain Hawks answered with the next four. In the third minute, junior Courtney Supp sprung in Van Siclen down the right side and she did the rest, beating goalkeeper Sophia Boggs to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.
"It's a great goal," said Lambinus. "We got the ball wide, attacked, didn't settle and got the ball in a good spot. We did it three or four more times. We created a bunch of chances, but as the game progressed, I thought we got into some bad habits of being too direct down the middle of the field and not being decisive enough in the final third of getting balls in good spots."
Less than a minute after Van Siclen's goal, Supp had a shot on goal herself, which was stopped by Boggs. Perhaps Lehigh's best remaining chance came off the foot of freshman Ava Schaller in the 25th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar.
First half shots were tied at five. Colgate held an 11-3 edge in second-half shots, but only 3-1 in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Miranda Royds stopped all three shots to keep the game even heading into overtime.
Both Lehigh and Colgate only had one shot over the 20 minutes of overtime, with none on goal, as each team earned a point in the overall Patriot League standings.
"After [Colgate's goal], I thought we battled for the rest of the game," said Lambinus. "There were really good opportunities. We defended really well, especially with some new players back there. Overall, we battled well. Honestly, we looked like a team that's still trying to figure it out. Different players, inconsistent training, so we still have some work to do."
Final shots were 17-9 in favor of Colgate while the Mountain Hawks held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Royds finished with five saves for Lehigh while Boggs made two for Colgate.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday for a big South Division matchup at Navy. Opening kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
"We've played better in every game and had some really good moments," said Lambinus. "We have to take another step."
