Lehigh blanked by Colgate, 5-0
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Coming off a dramatic victory on Tuesday night, the Lehigh men’s soccer team fell to Colgate on Saturday by a final score of 5-0. The Raiders scored a season-high five goals after two in the first half and three in the second and kept the Mountain Hawk offense in check on the night en route to Lehigh’s second Patriot League loss of the season.
“This was probably one my worst results in the Patriot League,” said head coach Dean Koski. “We were out-played, out-hustled, out-worked and out-coached. We just did not execute tonight.”
Colgate began the scoring when senior Mike Reidy, the Raiders’ leading point scorer, beat junior keeper Ciaran Nugent and found the back of the net off an assist from senior captain Mike Garzi to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
A little more than a minute later, the Raiders struck again, this time when sophomore Evan Heroux headed the ball past Nugent off an assist from junior Barnett Metzger to put Colgate up 2-0 in the 20th minute. Lehigh responded with Tuesday night’s hero Matt Weaver and junior Ben Wysocki firing shots but both were wide of the net.
The Mountain Hawks and Raiders ended with the same amount of shots in the first half but none of Lehigh’s attempts were on-goal, as opposed to the five shots-on-goal by Colgate. Ciaran Nugent made three first half saves for the Lehigh defense, while junior James Meyerkord was able to get off a team-high two shots.
Colgate began the second half by testing the Lehigh defense almost immediately. Junior Nick Arpey ripped a shot but Nugent was there to make the save. Arpey again blasted an attempt six minutes later, but this one hit the post and stayed out of the net.
The Raiders struck again as Garzi added a goal of his own in the 57th minute off an assist from Reidy and Metzger to extend Colgate’s lead to 3-0. Then, just over a minute later, Reidy scored his second goal of the match off an assist from senior Shane Conlin.
Lehigh did not record its first shot-on-goal until the 61st minute when junior Ben Borin fired a shot on the net, but Colgate keeper Liam Stapleton was there for the save.
The Mountain Hawks made a change at goalkeeper in the 64th minute after Nugent allowed a season-high four goals in the game, as sophomore Kevin Motylewski took over in net.
Conlin was then able to get on the board when he connected on a penalty kick in the 71st minute to continue the Raiders’ attack on the Mountain Hawk defense. The five goals scored by Colgate were a season-high for the Raiders, the most this season since a 3-2 overtime win over Binghamton on Aug. 24.
Borin and freshman Shane Mulcahy were the only two Mountain Hawks to test the Colgate defense on the night, each with a shot-on-goal. Nugent finished the night with four saves for the Mountain Hawks, while Lehigh was out-shot by the Raiders 12-10 in the game.
“Our commitment and mentality weren’t good tonight,” said Koski. “We just didn’t come ready to play and Colgate did. We need to do everything to put this game behind us and move forward.”
Lehigh will now idle before hosting rival Lafayette on Saturday Oct. 6 at the Ulrich Sports Complex for a match slated to start at 7 p.m.
