Lehigh drops 2-0 final at Navy
October 23, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy scored a pair of first-half goals, which proved to be the difference in downing the Lehigh women's soccer team 2-0 on Wednesday evening. Sophomore Ani Nahapetian made eight saves in a strong effort between the pipes. Despite the loss, the Mountain Hawks remain in Patriot League Tournament contention with two regular season games remaining, returning home on Saturday to host Colgate at 7 p.m.
"I'm very disappointed with our effort, desire and believe in the first half," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "It was better in the second, but you will not be a successful team in the Patriot League if you can't play for 90 minutes. Full credit to Navy because their entire team played with all of those traits. They are a quality team and deserving of their record."
Navy improved its perfect Patriot League record to 7-0-0 while the Mountain Hawks fell to 2-5-0 in league play, standing two points behind Army for the sixth and final postseason spot. The Black Knights defeated Holy Cross on Wednesday evening.
Morgan Dankanich opened the scoring in the ninth minute as Navy turned a transition opportunity into the game's first goal. Kaylie Davidson made a dish to the left and Dankanich fired a strike inside the right post to make it 1-0.
Lehigh had its first shot on goal at 21:12 looking to even the score, but senior Paige Dyrek's shot was stopped by Navy goalie Elizabeth Hoerner.
The Midshipmen responded with a pair of shots in the 33rd minute before making it 2-0 at the 35:10 mark as Lily Kraemer scored an unassisted tally to make it 2-0.
Junior Darby Dustman had the first shot in the second half for either side just over five minutes in, but it sailed wide. The Mountain Hawks posted two other shots on goal in the second half, from senior Murphee Greeley at 77:32 and senior Heather Camperson at 82:24, but neither could solve Hoerner who posted the shutout.
Final shots were 17-5 in favor of Navy while the Mids held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Nahapetian finished with eight saves across Hoerner's three.
Lehigh returns home for two straight to close out the regular season, beginning with Colgate this Saturday at 7 p.m.
